Are you one of those folks who have never tried yoga? How about one of those grown up teenagers who likes cow tipping and thought you might knock over your sister when she was doing yoga? Yes, I know that is fun isn't it? I have done this on many occasion and watched the silly looking humans fall right over indeed. Not bad, it is easy too; a little push and see ya, over they go. But really we should be very serious yoga is quite good for the soul, relaxation and de-stressing too. So, do not knock yoga until you try it. Now I have tried it so it is okay for me to make jokes, but if you have not tried it, you are barred from laughing or tipping over your friends who you think are looking quite silly while they do their "Yoga Thing."

So, why do yoga in the first place? Well for one it makes you feel good and practicing breathing is good for cardiovascular improvement. Such meditation makes you feel healthier and does wonders for your displacement and personality. There are many reasons why people who do yoga are healthier and it runs the gamut of reasoning from brain wave cycles to nerve response; temper management to handling stress; cardiovascular to healthy hearts. Some try it and do not like it, I for one. I am a long distance runner and would rather go run ten miles and get into a deep rhythm and I can tell you that is about the healthiest thing one can do. Now then when I describe this to friends who do yoga, they describe some of the exact same sensations. Interesting indeed, perhaps they have a better idea. After all jarring your knees and running up hills is not easy and they are said to get a greater benefit to the body without even going anywhere or exerting any energy? Wow, maybe yoga is not such a bad idea after all.

Many men will say; "Yogo is for girls" yet the professional athletes I know who do yoga are some of the top in their endeavors; why? Well because it works. So before you knock yoga, go read some books, try it out and see for yourself. Yoga is for everyone who is smart enough to understand why it works so well. Think on this, while you try it.

How does the meniscus work? The knee joint is very important to perform many activities. The joint is made up of three bones: the shin bone (tibia), the kneecap (patella) and the thigh bone (femur).

The surface of these bones in the joint are covered with cartilage (a firm, rubbery tissue that cushions bones at the joints). This surface helps the bones move more smoothly and can limit any damage to the bones. The meniscus helps distribute weight and provide stability to the joint. It is located between the cartilage surfaces of the bones.

What is a Meniscus Injury? The meniscus can be found on both the inside and outside of the knee. Your meniscus is injured when these pieces of cartilage are torn. These tears can be partial or complete tears. This injury usually happens when you are rotating your knee while it has weight on it. For example, when your are pivoting or you suddenly change direction. Injuries of the meniscus are common in sports such as soccer and football.

If you have pain when you straighten your leg, it is a good sign you may have torn your meniscus. This pain can be mild to severe. Your knee may swell either immediately or several hours after the injury. You may hear a sound similar to a click or a pop. You knee may feel weak and lock. These are all signs that you may have torn your meniscus.

Should I use knee braces for a Meniscus Injury? It may be a good idea to use a knee brace for a meniscus injury. Knee braces for a meniscus injury can help you protect the meniscus. This prevents further injury and allows the meniscus to heal. These braces will make sure your knee joint is stable. This can help decrease the pain you feel. Knee braces for a meniscus injury provides your knee with compression and support. Many braces are cost-effective, easy to use, and comfortable to wear.

Knee braces for a mensicus injury include braces like: the Medtherapies Deluxe Hinged Brace, the DonJoy Drytex Economy Hinged Brace, and the Breg Economy Hinged Brace. These braces cost $57.95 (Medtherapies), $69.96 (DonJoy) and $84.95 (Breg). One of the most popular braces for a meniscus injury is the DonJoy brace. The DonJoy has great customer reviews as well. All of these braces are level II braces. This means that each of these braces provides a basic level of support and protection for your knee.

1.) Collateral Ligaments

The collateral ligaments stabilize your knee when you are making a side to side movement. When they have suffered a tear, it is usually because you have been struck from the side. For instance, football players, who get tackled from the side, are at a high risk of suffering from collateral ligament damage. The pain usually originates from the side of your knee, and will be tender to the touch. Swelling, pain and a weakness in the knee joint are common symptoms of collateral ligament damage.

There are three grades of collateral ligament damage. They are:

Grade 1

Grade 1 is a minor stretching of the ligament, and can be classified as a sprain.

Grade 2

The ligament is partially torn

Grade 3

The ligament has been completely torn

2.) Mechanism of Injury

Stepping in a hole, being hit while your foot is firmly planted on the ground or twisting your foot sharply to the side can all lead to collateral ligament damage. There are a number of things you can do to treat collateral ligament damage, and in some cases, you can help treat it yourself (speak with your physician about definitive treatment methods).

The first thing you must do is rest the knee. Do not engage in any activity that aggravates or strains your knee. Elevate it when possible, and apply ice to the area frequently. Ice will hasten the healing process, and bring down the swelling and inflammation that are the root of the problem.

3.) Knee Braces For Support

Bracing is also an effective means of helping to treat collateral ligament damage. A knee brace helps provide stability to the knee, which will help promote healing. It also can provide gentle compression to the area, and this has been know to stimulate nerve fibres, which makes the area feel better. It is similar to when you stub your finger. When you stub your finger, your first reaction is to grab hold of it, which makes you feel better. A knee brace will do this for your knee.

Often times people will refer to these knee braces as a football knee brace, basketball knee brace, or a running knee brace. Yes, you can use a knee brace for these sports, but it is wise to help concentrate on the injury level first and then the sport.

You can prevent collateral ligament damage by warming up before you do anything strenuous. You should also stretch properly. If the pain persists, you should consult a physician to make sure that there is not something else wrong with your knee.

There may be 15 essential vitamins needed daily for a balanced diet. Knowing what these are can improve our physical and mental lives. The vitamins I will talk about in this article are basic for children. How these vitamins work and which ones you don't want too much of is something I will brief you on.

Vitamins are essential for good health. Some vitamins are known by letters and some by their chemical names and some by both. The body cannot manufacture most vitamins and rely on your balanced diet and/or supplemental consumption.

There are warnings on all vitamins/mineral supplements of accidental overdose. "Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years old." "In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately."

Children supplements contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid( Vitamin B12), Biotin, Vitamin B5, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc. Amount per serving are equal to 100% of their needs except in Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc.

Vitamin A is important for the immune system, infections of the kidney, bladder, lungs, and the mucous membrane (the lining around inner parts of our body to keep them moist), protects us against cancer and heart disease, helps skin repair itself, development of bones, and most common night blindness. The reason most multi-vitamins don't have a full days supply is our bodies convert some food we eat into Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is found in green and yellow plants. Plants we eat or eat the fruit of are carrots, cantaloupe, spinach, broccoli, mango, oranges, peaches, garlic, and sweet potatoes, just to name a few. Excessive amount can lead to liver failure. A deficient amount can cause night blindness and dry, itchy skin.

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is found in oranges, lemons, and potatoes. It is needed for the maintenance of the ligaments, tendons, and other supportive tissues. Some of these supportive tissues are blood vessels and muscles. Consumption of a healthy diet is best because too little can cause fatigue, swollen gums, nose bleeds, weakness, and scurry. Consumption of too much Vitamin C may cause Kidney stones. Vitamin C is for the immune function, to help keep the body healthy. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from food.

Vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which leads to stronger bones and teeth. Our bodies can get what we need from the sun's UV rays with just 10-15 minutes twice a week without sunscreen but it is not recommended due to the possibility of skin cancer. Vitamin D deficiency is called rickets which is an abnormal development of the bones. The most common forms of rickets is knock-knees.

Vitamin E is made in or bodies in our intestine by bacteria. It helps with proper clotting of the blood. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, helping to maintain a healthy heart. Foods like wheat germ, eggs and roasted nuts in a healthy diet are best.

Arthritis is a disease of the joints connecting the bones of the body. This happens when the said cartilage of the joint becomes weak, brittle, or deteriorated; the effect of which is the exposure of the bare bones to conditions leading to arthritis.

Knee arthritis is the most common form of this disease. Generally, it is due to old age, being overweight, or just hereditary. It is common because the knee is a part of the body that is mostly used everyday, when walking, running, or doing outdoor activities; only the degree of pain varies.

Pain can be suffered not only from arthritis; there are many sources of knee pain. It may be from bursitis or the inflammation by reason of frequent and constant pressure like overuse and kneeling. Pain may also come from tendinitis or the pain in the knee while ascending or descending from the stairs or when engaging in sports and outdoor activities. Other causes includes a strain or sprain, torn ligaments due to accidents, dislocation of the knee cap, injuries, infections in the joint, and tumors.

There are several causes of arthritis knee pain and it consists of the Baker's cyst, rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, connective tissue disorders, gout, and lupus. The Baker's cyst is characterized as a fluid-filled bulge behind one's knee that accompanies inflammation. The bad thing about the Baker's cyst is that when the cyst bursts, it will not just affect the knee but also your calf.

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage of the joint slowly deteriorates revealing the joints to arthritis attacks. In rheumatoid, it is not just gradual deterioration but the cartilage is destroyed because of the inflammation. Simply put, the Baker's cyst, rheumatoid, connective tissue disorders, gout and lupus have the same serious effect of severe inflammation including the tissues, bones, ligaments, nerves, and muscles around it.

Some common arthritis knee pain includes inflammation of the joints, swelling of the bones near the joints, problems in standing, walking, or running, and intolerable discomfort.

Arthritis pain varies depending on the cause. If the person suffering from arthritis belongs to the 50 years old and up bracket, the knee pain is pretty much tolerable but it is very hard to stand, walk, or run. In this case, the person suffering from this ailment must use a cane or a wheelchair for mobility. With respect to persons under 50 years of age, the cause of arthritis may be overuse, overweight, or genetic.

A knee is considered overused when the person is sports inclined and does not rest for a sufficient number of hours. In this type of arthritis the inflammation in the knee is serious and unbearable, but may still be cure through proper rest. When the person is overweight, the pain is experienced when walking or running. In this case it is having a hard time to carry the weight of one's body.

If you are suffering from joint pain or arthritis, then you must be eager to seek about joint pain cure. If fact, the best way to overcome joint pain is simply, exercising regularly. However, there are people who still insist on excusing themselves from exercise routines as they claimed that they do not have time for exercises or that they simply have less energy than before to exercise. Well, these are all just lame excuses. If you are having pain in your joint and you are looking for ways to overcome joint pain, then it is time to start getting rid of those pains with regular exercising. Let us look at 3 ways to help you with your condition.

A good way is to walk. Take a good long walk at least three times a week or do a step-aerobics or low-impact exercise routine. All these can provide your exercise with maximum results. There is no proof that running is bad for the joints. But you need to remember that it may aggravate a joint pain injury if you already have one. Always remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

One of the most important ways anyone can take to prevent joint pain at the knee is to lose weight if you are overweight. Extra weight puts extra stress on your knees. For example, if you are already 10 pounds overweight, then you are putting 60 pounds per square inch of extra pressure on your knees every time you take one step. Ouch! That extra pressure you put on your joint can slowly but definitely erode the cartilage in your knees, leading to arthritis joint pain.

Another way is to do muscle stretching. However, you should not do bouncing when doing stretching, as this can lead to a muscle pull. So what kinds of muscle stretching can you do? You can try this. Try to hold a slow, steady stretch exercise for 15 to 20 seconds, then relax and repeat this. It is best to flex up by stretching before any exercise, especially running and walking. It is also a good idea on another hand to stretch each day. Ask your doctor to teach you the correct way of stretches that focus on potential arthritis trouble spots, such as the knees or the lower back.

Just keep in mind that exercise is not only good for your joint pain, it is good for your health too. Hence, start exercising now!

Knee replacements can sometimes be inevitable. However, these procedures could also mean medical expenses, which you could only hope that your Social Security could cover. This is also for this reason that one should learn more about knee replacements and Social Security.

What Is Social Security?

Social Security refers to a social insurance program that provides benefits or services in recognition of contributions to an insurance scheme. These services include retirement pensions, disability insurance, survivor benefits, and unemployment insurance.

Knee Pain Patients and Disability claims

Severe arthritis and other structural damage to the knees can highly support a successful Social Security disability claim. Most chronic knee pain patients who claim social security are in their forties and fifties. Knee pain is usually the result or wear and tear after a few years. Some are involved in a car accident years ago; some were injured when they were still high school athletes while others simply wore down their cartilage or bones in the knees after standing on hard concrete for many years.

Damage to one or both knees can result to exertional impairments like limitations on standing, walking, stooping, climbing and carrying. Non-exertional impairments are also present like pain, poor sleep, pain medication and side effects, and obesity.

Social Security judges usually encounter knee pain as the reason on claiming disability. However, you should bear in mind that when making a claim, you have to show that the pain is more than the mild to moderate discomfort that patients usually experience. Your pain must be very severe and debilitating to a point that you have difficulty in walking and sitting.

Moreover, most judges look for factors like long consistent work history of the patient, MRI and X-ray reports that are objective proofs of evidence of the knee problems, and recommendations from the attending doctor that knee replacement is needed. Bilateral knee replacements are usually favored. Other factors that the judges will consider include dysfunction of a major weight-bearing joint. They may also look into those who are over fifty years old with limited education as well as unskilled work background.

It should be proven as well that functional capacity for work has been affected and reduced by the knee pain itself.

A Case of Knee Replacement

Take, for example, a 59-year old female who worked as a registered nurse at a local hospital for thirty years. Educational background was high school graduate with two years in nursing school. In January 2005, she visited a relative in the hospital, but her right knee was unexpectedly buckled while exiting the elevator. During that time, she was 54 years old, a little overweight, and was suffering from non-insulin dependent diabetes and hypertension.

She was able to return to her job after the fall and underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right knee in March 2005. However, the surgery was not favorable, so she underwent right knee replacement surgery in October the same year. After a year, the left knee was also deteriorated as a result of the extra pressure of the surgery the other year. In November 2006, she had left knee replacement. However, she was not free of pain or was able to walk without assistance.

The judges agreed to have her on Social Security after hearing. According to them, the claimant cannot return to her job anymore. The claimant's long and consistent work history, the objective nature of the medical problem presented, age, and helpful functional capacity form from the attending doctor were believed to be the main factors in the judges' favorable decision.
